Key Takeaways from Nodes 2024

Sharon Stewart, consultant here at Metataxis, shares her recent experience at the Nodes 2024 virtual conference. This 24-hour free online conference, accessible across all time zones and locations, focused on bringing together the biggest graph community gathering dedicated to graph-powered apps and contextual AI with the latest GenAI innovations!

There’s never been a more exciting time to be involved in knowledge and information management. I’m having a grat-attack (attack of gratitude) after attending the Nodes 2024 virtual conference. The conference, hosted by Neo4j, Inc., a graph database and data analytics company, ran over 24 hours and was packed with inspiring sessions presented by over 170 speakers.

The event was marketed as online developer conference, but I think it was beneficial for anyone with an interest in knowledge graphs and how they are being used to solve complex business problems. As an Information Management Consultant, I wasn’t out of place among Data Engineers, Data Scientists, Business Analysts, Software Developers, Software Architects, and students to name but a few.

Why all the excitement? A couple of reasons:

Firstly, I am inspired by the incredible work that is going on in the Generative AI space, particularly in relation to knowledge graphs and the ability to leverage corporate data to drive innovation and enable better business decisions. I remember offices before the Internet and search engines. Finding information meant leafing through hardcopy publications, phoning a colleague, or using standalone proprietary terminals  – if you were lucky – to find the data you needed.  The opportunities currently being developed to exploit information is mind-blowing, from helping people with functional memory challenges to tracking down terrorists, fraudsters and other criminal activities.

Secondly, assisting organisations in managing and governing their information effectively has arguably never been so crucial—or so rewarding—in ensuring that the data used by Generative AI platforms is reliable and well-regulated.

Key takeaways from the conference
  • The importance of clean data for AI applications, “your data needs to be nice and clean – as clean as you can get it”, Ashleigh Faith, Founder of IsA DataThing YouTube Channel
  • The peak of the Big Data and Generative AI hype cycle has not yet been reached
  • The need for rigorous risk management practices, including bias management and incident response plans; the importance of collaboration across teams for effective risk management
  • Emphasis on optimising models post-training and the competitive advantage it provides
  • The enforcement of the EU AI Act – EU AI guidelines – could disrupt existing business plans

One of my favourite quotes was a tagline on one of the speakers’ profiles: “Enterprise without KG [knowledge graph] is like country without a map” – so true!
