Introducing robust information and data governance to support better outcomes
Introduction
Founded in 1953, our client is the UK’s largest charitable organisation. With a network of over 250 local support groups, it aims to fund research, raise awareness and provide expert information to its supporters, volunteers and audiences.
Business drivers
This not-for-profit organisation identified a clear need to harness the power of data, technology, and digital capabilities to enhance service delivery in a more sensitive and effective way.
Their data strategy set out a vision to become a data and insights-driven organisation. This would be enabled by improved, integrated systems and a robust data architecture designed to capture, connect and provide a comprehensive view of their relationships with both their supporters and users. It also aimed to use data and technology to drive greater efficiencies in how they work.

To support this ambition, the national charity had already initiated a data management programme. This included the implementation of a new CRM system and the development of a data management framework. The framework established clear data definitions, processes, procedures, and competency models to guide how data is collected, accessed and used, to maximise the value of data across the organisation.
Key requirements
The charity selected Metataxis as their delivery partner to:
- Develop an information and data governance framework
Establishing high-level governance principles, with clearly defined roles, responsibilities, and senior-level accountability. - Create an information and data asset register
Providing a comprehensive inventory of data assets, including where data is stored, ownership, value, and associated protection requirements. - Design a data competency framework
Defining the skills and capabilities required across the organisation to effectively manage and use data at different levels. - Establish an information and data management operating model
Identifying key data management processes and clarifying ownership and responsibilities for their execution.
The Metataxis approach
Metataxis adopted a fully consultative, partnership-driven approach, tailored to the client’s unique context and informed by industry standards and best practice.
For each of the key deliverables, we engaged extensively with key stakeholders across the organisation through a combination of one-to-one interviews, small group discussions, and workshops. This ensured that all perspectives were captured and reflected in the deliverables. Before beginning stakeholder engagement, we reviewed all existing internal documentation to build on prior work and avoid duplication. This enabled us to accelerate progress and make efficient use of time.
All deliverables were shared with the internal team for review, ensuring alignment with their unique organisational needs. Regular project and review sessions were held to maintain momentum and ensure expectations were met.
A key priority throughout was to ensure that solutions were appropriately “right-sized” for the charity, providing robust, but pragmatic solutions in line with the client’s risk appetite and resources available.

The charity now has increased confidence in the quality and integrity of data within their new CRM system, which directly supports their strategic goal of building stronger customer data and insights. They now benefit from a trusted, authoritative 360-degree view of their audiences, enabling more informed decision-making and improved engagement.
Data quality has significantly improved due to clearly defined data management, governance, processes and user expectations across the organisation.
The charity is now better equipped to manage its information and data effectively and can confidently provide assurance to the Board regarding the strength of its data governance practices.
